You can cross the whole region by road in forty minutes, visit two wineries, take a photograph in Laguardia and leave convinced you&#8217;ve been there. Or you can take the dirt tracks that run between the vineyard plots, climb to a ridge the tarmac never reaches, and stand alone in front of a burial chamber built five thousand years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, essentially, is what a buggy tour through Rioja Alavesa is. Here&#8217;s how it works, what you&#8217;ll see, and what you need in order to join one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a buggy tour in Rioja actually is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a&nbsp;<strong>guided excursion along farm tracks and vineyard roads<\/strong>, in a light two- or four-seat off-road vehicle that&nbsp;<strong>you drive yourself<\/strong>, following a guide who leads the convoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not a motorsport activity, and speed is not the point. The logic is the opposite: the buggy is simply the vehicle that gets you where neither a car nor a tour bus can go. You travel slowly, in convoy, stopping often, and much of the time is spent looking at the landscape and being told what you&#8217;re looking at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All LAGA tours depart from\u00a0<strong>Laguardia<\/strong>, the medieval walled town at the heart of Rioja Alavesa, and we run\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lagarioja.com\/en\/types-of-buggy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lagarioja.com\/en\/types-of-buggy\/\"><strong>automatic Can-Am buggies<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 no gear changes, no clutch. If you can drive an automatic car, you can drive one of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why a buggy and not a car, a bike or a minibus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rioja Alavesa holds&nbsp;<strong>14,571 hectares of vineyard across 18 municipalities<\/strong>, according to official DOCa Rioja figures. All of it is stitched together by a network of farm tracks built so tractors can reach the plots at harvest \u2014 and those tracks are, for the rest of the year, the best way to understand the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>By car<\/strong>&nbsp;you can&#8217;t use most of those tracks, and where you can, you can&#8217;t stop where you want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By bike<\/strong>&nbsp;you&#8217;ll get there, but you&#8217;ll cover a fraction of the ground \u2014 and in July, on the climbs towards the Sierra de Cantabria, it becomes a different kind of day out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By minibus<\/strong>&nbsp;you see the landscape through a window, from the main road.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By buggy<\/strong>&nbsp;you cover 40 to 60 km of tracks in a morning, get out wherever it&#8217;s worth getting out, and reach the viewpoints from above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there&#8217;s something else: a buggy has&nbsp;<strong>no windows<\/strong>. You smell the rosemary, the dust, the wet earth \u2014 and in September, the fermenting grapes. It&#8217;s a fairly literal way of being inside a landscape instead of looking at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our two routes: Vi\u00f1a and Sierra<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We run two tours. It crosses the heart of the region around&nbsp;<strong>Laguardia, Elciego, Villabuena de \u00c1lava, Samaniego, \u00c1balos and Leza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key stops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Elciego viewpoint<\/strong>, with the village, the church of San Andr\u00e9s and Frank Gehry&#8217;s titanium-clad Marqu\u00e9s de Riscal hotel (2006) set against the mountains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The San Felices hermitage<\/strong>&nbsp;above \u00c1balos, with one of the cleanest panoramas over the Ebro valley.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Alto de la Huesera dolmen<\/strong>, in the municipality of Laguardia: a megalithic passage tomb with an eight-metre corridor, built roughly&nbsp;<strong>4,500\u20135,000 years ago<\/strong>, where the remains of more than a hundred people were documented. It leaves at 16:00, which in spring and autumn means making the final stops with late afternoon light falling across the vines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remelluri<\/strong>, in Labastida, one of the few Rioja estates with its own continuous single-estate vineyard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra<\/strong>, perched above the Ebro.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The hermitage of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Piscina<\/strong>, completed in&nbsp;<strong>1136<\/strong>&nbsp;and consecrated in&nbsp;<strong>1137<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 considered the best-preserved Romanesque building in La Rioja. It appears without warning in the middle of open country, with no village around it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>El Balc\u00f3n de la Rioja<\/strong>, beside the Puerto de Herrera pass at around&nbsp;<strong>1,000 m<\/strong>. For a lot of people it&#8217;s the moment the whole thing clicks because means drinking the wine that comes out of exactly the clay-limestone soil you&#8217;ve spent the last two hours driving across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements: who can drive, who can ride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To&nbsp;<strong>drive<\/strong>&nbsp;a buggy you need to be&nbsp;<strong>25 or over<\/strong>, hold a&nbsp;<strong>valid category B licence<\/strong>, and have held it for at least&nbsp;<strong>2 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Passengers<\/strong>&nbsp;are welcome from&nbsp;<strong>4 years old<\/strong>, but the client is who has to bring the reglamentary chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No off-road experience is needed. The buggies are automatic, the guide sets the pace, and before setting off you recibe a briefing about how does the vehicle works.
